Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Santa Fe Social Justice Committee Mission Statement
“To fulfill our congregational mission, the Social Justice Committee will facilitate actions leading to greater equity, justice and compassion. We will identify, nurture and support initiatives to mobilize the congregation to action informed by UU values, beliefs and history.”
"We're not all alike politically, but we believe in social justice and humane treatment for everybody."
UUCSF Social Justice Committee News
For the present, the Social Justice Committee is acting as a steering committee, overseeing the efforts of our task forces and representing the congregation regarding social justice action. We are, however, in need of greater support from the congregation - specifically, we need more members if we are to carry out the plans we have discussed for the coming year. Participation on this committee can provide you with the opportunity to express your concerns about social justice and guide the congregation and our community on issues of economic, social and political importance, issues that we as UU’s deeply care about. The issues we hope to explore in the coming year include, but are not limited to:
- Coordination and expansion of the Hunger and Poverty Task Force projects: providing service to the homeless and education and training for advocacy on poverty issues;
- Development of a new Creating Peace Task Force. We plan to begin with the organization of a community forum. Such a forum is in accordance with Creating Peace, the 2010 Statement of Conscience just approved by the UUA General Assembly, which says in part, “We advocate a culture of peace through transformation of public policies;”
- Providing a voice for the various perspectives on immigration reform, building toward participation in the UUA General Assembly in 2012 with the theme: “Immigration is a Moral Issue;”
- Developing a Welcoming Diversity Task Force (incorporating the current Welcoming Diversity Committee in the SJC) for expanded programs; and
- Learning about the current Unitarian Universalist Service Committee goals.
