Role of the Committee on Ministry at UUCSF

The Committee on Ministry’s role is to strengthen the quality of ministry within the congregation. Our concern is the whole ministerial body. We seek to understand, assess, support, and advocate for a robust ministry throughout the context of congregational life. We serve as a support group for the minister and a communication channel between the minister and the congregation, listening with respect, compassion, and confidentiality.

The most important functions of the COM are:

  1. to aid the minister in carrying on the effective ministry by being available for counsel;
  2. to keep the minister advised of conditions within the congregation as they affect relationships between the minister and members, with the main emphasis on strengthening and improving relationships;
  3. to continually interpret to the congregation the nature and scope of the work of the minister, including a clarification of role expectations and realistic priorities for the minister and members;
  4. to consult with the minister and submit an annual compensation recommendation to the board and/or appropriate committees;
  5. to work with the minister on his continuing education program, sabbatical planning, or other professional development and to advocate such plans to the governing board and congregation, including appropriate funding;
  6. to review the minister’s professional goals for the year and assess progress through a ministerial evaluation;
  7. to track how the members of the congregation take care of themselves and each other, including how the lay ministerial leadership and the called minister serve the congregation;
  8. to interview prospective ministerial students and make recommendations about their sponsorship # to the Board of Trustees; and to recommend to the congregation candidates for sponsorship for the ministry.

We encourage feedback and ideas from the congregation and share them with the minister, the Board of Trustees, and/or the appropriate committee to support our mission and ministry at UUCSF.

Piano Concert to Benefit UUCSF’s Music Program - Saturday, June 7, 2:00 p.m.

Pianists Edwin Light and Madeline Williamson will perform four-hand works of Mozart, Schubert, Fauré, and Barber on Saturday, June 7, at UUCSF at 2:00 p.m. The pianists are donating their concert fees; a suggested donation of $10 per adult (children are free) will help support the music program at UUCSF.

They will be performing W.A. Mozart’s Sonata in B-flat, followed by the rarely heard Souvenirs by Samuel Barber. Franz Schubert’s monumental Fantasie in F minor will follow, and the program concludes with the Dolly Suite by Gabriel Fauré.

Edwin Light (whom we have heard at the keyboard with Lydia Madrick) served on the faculties of McNeese State University and Fitchberg State College. He has over 20 years’ experience as organist-choirmaster in churches in the Boston and Cincinnati areas.

Madeline Williamson was on the Artist Faculty of the School of Music at Arizona State University for 30 years. She distinguished herself especially in the performance of new music for piano.

The concert was also performed on March 16 at the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos, to an enthusiastic audience. You might want to seek a review from a Los Alamos friend.
